Another Vision Board In Progress!

I'm thinking of getting started today on another vision board since I've had so much success with the last one I created for this year. I think this time around I won't focus so much on putting a time frame (like 2010 or 2011) but more so on things just happening positively at the time its supposed to happen!!

The picture I used isn't my personal one...I found that one online to give those out there that haven't heard of this an idea of what I'm talking about. I'm thinking I may post mines this year and update throughout the year.

I'm in a mood today. A damn good mood at that! I'm ready to get back into my blogging and I have to admit that I've been missing doing this everyday. I've had a lot of personal crap going on and I'm happy to say that I found myself again and I'm ready to get back into things that make me happy--->> being here is one of them!

I'm currently natural still but I'm growing my hair out underneath my weave as we speak. I'll touch on my experience as being natural in days to come but this is just a brief update for those that still visit (I see ya!!) to let you know what's been going on with my hair progress.

I'm definitely looking forward to doing better things on here!

My Life, My Blog, My Decisions

Wow, can't believe I've been gone on here for so long again. I sincerely apologize for that lovelies. I've had to take some time off for myself as I've been in and out of depressing moods for days. A lot of times in life, we forget to take care of ourselves when we're so focused on taking care of everybody and everything else.

I've been doing this for years and with personal problems arising a few weeks ago...everything came to a boiling point and I felt like I was hit with a ton of bricks. This is not how I envisioned my life to be after I graduated from High School to say the least. Don't get me wrong, I love my life but I don't love the decisions that I make that obviously keep taking me down the wrong paths.

I've decided (with the help of a great buddy)to start making goals for myself and keeping track of what I'm trying to do. Like she said, how can you ever achieve anything if you never write it down. Well, I'm writing and it feels good. So, where does this fit in here you say....

I know I've been back and forth about where I wanted my blog to go...but I've decided that I have to do what's best for me for once. I will continue to blog for those that read it for hair. I will be adding more personal things on here such as my journey to living happier and living my life to its full potential. I hope that maybe someone out there feeling the same way that I do will get some kind of inspiration from what I have to say.

I will continue to do hair updates but my hair doesn't change every week so I just don't feel I should continue to blog about nothing. There are so many hair blogs out there and I feel like I'm just adding repeat info and that's not what I'm happy doing. I want to blog about life, hair, and everything else! I hope to keep my readers entertained with this but I understand if that's not what you're interested in. But at least I can say...I'm happy with this decision!

Plus, I think I feel more free to blog then having to do everything by the books ;O) This is a way for me to reach others who feel like their never going to graduate from school, never find a great style for their hair type, never going to find great friends, etc... Life is a lot easier knowing you're not alone in the situation. Browne & Lovely is my place to do that.

I've also decided to wait until June..maybe even July to get the next sew-in. I feel I may have a setback from having to straighten my section of hair that was left out!! NOT GOOD.

Although I like my Denman-I always felt like I was tearing through my hair even when I had loads of conditioner on it. I happened to find this tutorial on YT from Vivacious1083 that shows you how to remove some of the teeth from your Denman.

Let me say that I'm in love with it now! It's so much simpler and not as "full" as it was before. I really feel like I was using it with way to many teeth and it was grabbing my non-shed hair as well SMH, I can't have that!!

Lemon Sugar Facial Scrub

I've been looking for a gentle exfoliating scrub I could use on my face that wouldn't run me over $20. These days all these "natural" products are pretty much hitting my pockets hard so I gotta cut corners with somethings as long as I can find a healthy substitute.

I decided to begin using a lemon sugar facial scrub to help exfoliate my skin while providing some of that wonderful vitamin C lemons have to help smooth and soothe as well. Lemon juice is a natural astringent so it can help tighten and clear pores, as well as help kill harmful surface bacteria. This is exactly what I need!

Some people love to add honey, olive oil, yogurt, etc... but I love to keep it simple and use just fresh lemon juice & sugar. A little goes a long way so have at it! I use 2 teaspoons of sugar and add lemon juice until it's consistency I like.

3 Tips to finding a great stylist

How many times do you go on hair boards and blogs and read about a salon visit gone wrong? I mean, be honest, how many times have we read horror stories about a scissor happy stylist that has detangled your natural hair with a rat tail comb without deep conditioning your hair? Okay, I might have stretched out the deep conditioning BUT I have been reading these kinds of stories lately and I want to make sure I put some tips that I used to find my wonderful stylist.

I’ve noticed that a majority of the time [we] clients don’t take the opportunity to research and find a stylist that will help us reach the healthy hair goals we are trying to accomplish. Bad stylists don’t become bad overnight…they usually are already at or way past that stage! So take the time out to find a great stylist that will give you the healthy hair and look that you’re going for…trust me-IT’S WORTH YOUR TIME :O)

Tip # 1
Let Google Be Your Friend

I found my current stylist on Myspace. Yes, on Myspace! This goes to show that by doing a little bit of searching and twitter stalking…err ummm “following” you can get to the info you need! I will say two of the easiest places to start are Twitter and Facebook.

Oh, and if a stylist you’ve heard of can’t be found ANYWHERE online…don’t even bother. It’s 2010 and internet marketing is a business owner’s best friend. An up-to-date stylist should have a webpage somewhere with updated pictures of their work and current contact info. I don’t know about you all but I’m big on easy access to pictures and if I’ve only got your email or a phone number…I’m not going to waste my time.

Remember, negative reviews can also be found online and that’s definitely a red alert so take heed and proceed with caution! Personal reviews can be a client out for revenge or a true horror story. You be the judge!

Tip # 2

Visit Local Salons

This can be time consuming but remember-it’s YOUR hair. Take the time to go out to salons that you think you may be interested in and see if you can sit and watch while the stylists do hair. Now, this may be uncomfortable for some of you to ask but doing this will give you the opportunity to see how the customers are treated, how the stylists perform, and the overall mood of the shop.

If you’re not comfortable asking, see if you could get a tour of the shop or a consultation and explain why you are doing this. A great stylist/salon should be understanding and more than willing to help. If you get any negative feedback (laughing, sarcastic remarks, or awkward responses)-MOVE ON. Remember, as the client you have and need to feel comfortable with the stylist that you choose. If not, it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

Tip # 3

Recommendations

This is by far the easiest way to find a stylist but it’s also the way I’ve found to be very risky. Remember not every stylist is going to be a good fit for you just because they are perfect for (insert name here). If you are member of a hair board, this would probably be the fastest way to find someone in your area that performs a specific service.

Get advice from friends and family that have that always come home satisfied with a great look! Dig deep…ask questions about anything you feel is important to know about their experience with the stylist and the salon. You want the best working on your head!

Remember that these days ANYBODY can become a cosmetologist. I hate to say it like that but…it is what it is. With that being said, you control who puts their hands in your hair. If you’re going to invest money in getting your hair done, why not invest an equal amount of time to find someone that values healthy hair care? Your.Choice.

I have been slaving away ya'll!!! Really, I have been doing sooooo much research and articles for the blog. I'm trying to gather up more valuable info and organize it in a way that will allow people to come here and find what they are looking for without having to go through millions of tags and posts! (We all know how that is *rolls eyes*) LOL!

Okay, so I've been working on different topics such as oils, homemade products, reviews, scalp problems, etc.... so much stuff to finish up. I'm wrapping up a few of the posts tonight and will be resuming a more "regular" schedule. (I know, I know...I'm trying!!!!) I'm going to be doing 2 posts a day- a morning post and a late afternoon post. Will that work? :OP

I'm going to be adding a few things to the blog as well as taking some things away. I want to make this more user-friendly and share my thoughts on hair care with the world (or all my fellow hair sistas :O)

I'm really excited to get back into blogging and although it's hard work...I love to do it and hopefully you guys will love the changes!

Financial Fitness: No Buy Challenge for March

So, I've been buying up stuff left and right...and guess what. I'm officially putting myself on a no-buy challenge.

That's right....the only things I can buy will be necessities...I repeat, NECESSITIES!! I've got so many products right now that I'll be doing product reviews for the next couple of weeks. I really shouldn't be proud to say that. I'm actually resisting the urge to purchase some unrefined shea butter right now...LOL.

Anyhow, the purpose of this challenge is to curve my spending habits. I'll keep an update on here....probably every week to update whether I was successful or not for the week. Since this is my first time doing this I'm going to start slow and ease my way into stopping impulse purchases. I must say that I've honest done a great job so far!

Product Review: Karen's Body Beautiful

So, I happen to be cruising through one of my favorite hair boards and came across a heated discussion involving Karen's Body Beautiful. I immediately remembered how much I wanted to try this company in the past but as I was reading the complaint against the company...I wondered if I would be satisfied with their customer service. (Let Google Be Your Friend)

So, against all odds...I went ahead and ordered about $80 worth of products. I purchased the following (I'll add links for ease :O)

Cold Winter Regimen Set (Lavender Vanilla)

Shower Gel (Egyptian Musk)

Olive Oil Body Lotion (Egyptian Musk)

Bar Soap (Chamomile Sage)

Hair Nectar (Lavender Vanilla)

The winter regimen set actually includes 8 oz bottles of the moisturizing shampoo & conditioner, hair milk, and jar of hair butter. If you purchase each separately, the benefit is that you can pick individual scents for each product...however, each will run you about $16 with the exception of the shampoo which is $12. I opted to purchase the set in one scent because it was the cheaper option, $52, and I didn't want a whole bunch of scents going on.

PROS:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the hair milk and the hair butter. The hair milk is very moisturizing and it works wonders on my daughters hair. I like the body wash and the soap so far!

CONS:

I've only used the shampoo, conditioner, and hair milk once. That was right after I chopped off my hair!!! Personally, the shampoo made my scalp itchy. My hair was indeed dirty so I will be bias and say that I will still try it again. The conditioner I didn't care for as far as consistency goes. My hair is super thick and all I have left now is half a bottle (I had to stop before I used it all!) :O( so I wished that it would have been a little thicker. The body lotion was a little thin but okay for my hands when dry.

OVERALL:

My package arrived safe and sound with all my products. It came with that posh little black bag from the store and two bite-size samples of two other lotion scents. I might add that one of the samples was Egyptian Musk and I'd already ordered it so that really didn't make sense to me but whatever. I forgot to mention that the company also have wonderful specials every week called Freebie Fridays! Sign up on the site and receive the emails :O)

The products are really great (with the exception of a few consistency problems) if you love natural products. I got my order quickly and received all my products. I'd definitely order the hair milk and hair butter again.

I decided to go ahead and cut all the relaxed ends so that I could go into my sew-in with ease. I let some of the ends on since at one point I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open..LOL. My stylist trimmed the rest off but I didn't get that picture before I got my hair done...but it wasn't that big of a difference than what you see below.

Product Review: Carol's Daughter Sea Salt Body Scrub

So, I found a great find for all you Carol's Daughters fans out there....her products are now in TJ Maxx! The best part about this is...LOWER PRICES!!!! Now the products may vary from store to store as far as what's available or offered so definitely ask one of the employees if you can't locate.

REVIEW:

This product will change your bath/shower experience.

I'm.not.kidding.

I purchased the Groove scent (smells so yummy :O) and my skin was soooooooo soft afterwards it was ridiculous. I went back and purchased another scrub in the Almond Cookie scent and although I don't care for the scent-I do LOVE the results from the product. This would definitely be a great product to use if you do your own pedicures as well. This scrub really softens the skins and leaves you very very moisturized! I paid $7.99 at TJ Maxx but it usually retails for $28 dollars a jar.

I know...a deal right! ENJOY!!

So far, I've used the BBC on my daughter's hair and I'm still learning how to incorporate this into her regimen. It's a great consistency and smells nice.

The DO Black Soap is okay. It's very fragrant and black (and I mean messy type black). It really gets all over your counter and towels. It's pretty cliche' for it to be that dark considering that black soap is usually a dark brownish color. I usually order from Nasabb's and I think I'll be ordering some again since I usually use black soap in my skin regimen. I like this one for my hair and as a pedicure treat!

The Emu Dundee Sheep Milk Bar was not very good to my skin. I used it to wash and immediately when I rinsed it off....my skin felt dry as sand while I was still under the shower water!!! I had to really slather on some lotion afterwards so I think I will finish this bar and try a different one.

The Curly Pudding is still unopened! I don't have a reason to use it yet so I will be cracking it open once I officially do my BC. That's coming soon BUT I am doing the weave challenge so my hair will be pretty much hidden for most of the year except during updates.

I haven't used the free samples yet but I plan on using them soon. I'm so happy I got the opportunity to try out products that I normally wouldn't have tried. Hope you all enjoyed the LITTLE I could dish about these products. TTYL!

Countdown to Weave Challenge

Okay, so my tax refund is coming later than expected....I'm not thrilled about that. I plan on changing my site up a bit as my needs for blogging have really changed. I received my package from Honeyfig on Saturday and will be doing a haul post for tomorrow!!!

I've tried several different things over the past few days that I'd like to share as well so I'm back to doing my busy posting for the next few days. Since I don't have access to a computer at home...I'm thinking I may be scheduling posts from here on.

The Weave Challenge Details Link will be active on January 31 once I get my hair done. I'm not sure what I'm going to do exactly since I don't have the products and such so I think it's better to wait until I actually get the sew in. I mean, what if something goes wrong and I don't get it installed? I can't take that chance...LOL.

Prayers to the CItizens of Haiti

Please keep Haiti in your prayers as they continue to go through the devastation of the earthquake. It's hard to look at the pictures as they come but let them serve as a reminder that not everyone is out there doing okay in the world. Wyclef Jean's organization is accepting donations by texting Yele to 501501 will automatically donate $5 to the organization through your cell phone bill. Trust me, you'll feel better after doing so.

I pray the President Obama is able to provide some relief to this country. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and with the devastation it has incurred from natural disasters...we can only pray things will get better with time and donations.

Weave Challenge 2010

So, about a week ago I watched Reniece showcasing her progress video. When I say progress it's truly an understatement!

Her hair is gorgeous to say the least and to be totally natural...I'm speechless! I'm still amazed at how straight, shiny, and healthy her hair is. So, as I continue on my journey to natural hair I've decided to begin a weave challenge to grow my hair out successfully.

The guidelines will be listed under the picture icon on the side bar! The rules will be posted later today (around 4 pm). I opted not to post on Friday since I found some additional ones I wanted to incorporate!

My Product Wish List

The main thing I have decided to change about my regimen is being consistent. I'm horrible at this and my hair is showing the effects. As I mentioned before, my hair is dry and hard (very hard) to detangle unless I'm in the shower washing it. I've decided that I'm going to begin using a line of products vs. trying out a poo here, a condish there, another leave-in over here... ARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHH.

I'm literally tired of doing that so I'm buckling down and recording my progress in a notebook and keeping a picture log of every month. The only way to be successful is to stop being lazy and take charge of the health of my hair. So, here's my Wish List for 2010! This is a product that Reniece uses in her regimen and I definitely wanted to try this out as one of my moisturizers. I have a tendency to just go to bed without moisturizing & sealing (not to mention without a scarf..eeek!) which also sets me back as well.

Unrefined Shea Butter

Unrefined shea butter has become a staple in many regimens. Savanna Trading fairly trades with small scale producers and Women's Cooperatives across several rural communities to bring customers quality, 100% natural and authentic products.It's hard making this stuff! I think that I will be using this more on my skin than hair though. It depends.

Jane Carter Solution

This will definitely be incorporated into my daughter's regimen. I'll also be including some pics of her hair and progress on here as well! This is a great way to keep your hair moisturized and I definitely want to increase the moisture in her hair.

So, this concludes my list. I told you all that I was keeping it simple!!! I'm not spending a bunch of money on products that I'm not using or have the potential not to use or like. I'm taking it slow.

I had never heard of this organization until last night. I happened to be watching Launch My Line (don't judge me, LOL) and my fiance came in and said that he found something interesting on TV. So he flipped to this documentary called, Very Young Girls. The young ladies involved had been sexually exploited by pimps and trying to leave the life and pursue better things. Although most see them as simply prostitutes, the truth remains that these girls (13 and up) are abused, afraid, and abandoned in this lifestyle.

The Executive Director & Founder, Rachel Lloyd, was a part of the documentary as well. She was there mentoring and encouraging these young women to stay out of trouble and pursue bigger and better things. The best thing about her was that she never tried to FORCE anyone to stay or change their life. She provided support and open arms for anyone that wanted help or wanted to return to the center.

Honestly, the part of the movie that sent chills down my spine was when Rachel won an award and gave her acceptance speech. She said, (in my own words) that basically the Academy Awards gave an award for a song called It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp and if it's hard out here for a pimp...think about how hard it is for a 13 year old girl being sexually exploited, beaten up, threatened constantly..etc. I mean, it really hit me. The documentary was well worth the watch and if you haven't seen it then I highly recommend seeing it.

Recreating My Regimen & Weave Challenge

So, as of lately my hair is beginning to look more and more like this picture except for the fact that my roots are puffy, my hair is dry, and I'm running out of products. I'm going to do a self assessment tonight and figure out what my problems are and what I need to be doing to correct them.

We've all seen Reniece's hair (by now) video on Youtube and I must say her progress is amazing and the fact that she's natural gives me hope. I've decided to do a weave challenge for this year and begin growing out my natural hair starting January 30. I'll be getting a weave done anyhow so why not BC and start the challenge!

I'm still waiting for my Honeyfig order to be shipped out so as soon as I receive it I'll show you guys what I got! Matter of fact, I may just do a haul of all hair products I currently have in my closet.

I won't be posting my new regimen until January 30th. So, I'll be keeping it super simple until then and hopefully I'll get the products I want by then as well. I'm doing all my research now and will be posting up my product wish tomorrow.

2010 Weaves 4 Growth Challenge

Weave Challenge will officially begin on February 13, 2010!

Here are the details of the challenge:

1. Weave install will take place every 2-3 months.

2. Shampoo weave every 2 weeks and also doing a DC on my hair underneath. Sit under a dryer to completely dry my hair.

3. Spray Light Moisturizer 2-3 times a week as needed.

4. Wash & condition my hair, that's left out, weekly.

5. Treatments will be done on an As-needed basis. If I decide I need anything, I'll definitely post about it during the updates.

6. Provide Before/After pictures for updates every 2-3 months.

The goal of this challenge is to help my hair grow...not destroy it in the process. It is essential that you take care of your natural hair underneath so that you can retain length instead of having to chop it off due to tangling and matting.

Anyone else that's doing a weave challenge, feel free to e-mail me with your thoughts, tips, suggestions, and pics!

Things are really picking up for me right now! Considering all I've been through during this year...I can't believe that my year is going out with a bang.

I can't wait to come back for the new year. I won't be as busy and will be focusing more on my blog. Bear with me as I'm am also deleting irrelevant posts. I'll also be adding my daughter's hair journey as well!

My first little girl so it's been rough with the trial and error on my braiding...hehe!

Better things for 2010. I've got to do better with my pictures and such. I've decided to back off of the BC only b/c of some salons I want to try out and see how they handle transitioning hair.

Here are a couple of the pictures! I have had the worst time getting them on here, LOL! I had car problems yesterday so I didn't make it to the library :O( I didn't even get my homework done, SMH...what to do what to do.

Then, my computer was acting up at work this morning so.........well, here they are. They aren't the best but I got them up! I'll be taking some more this week after I get my Indigo Henna. I think I want to do a tutorial on that but I've got to figure out this mobile blogging issue that I'm having.

Thanks for the comments and the *side-eye* LMAO, yep you called me out. I haven't had a chance to add any pictures because my internet is off and the camera I have isn't compatable with my computer. I could list all the other drama I've tried to go through but it honestly begins to sound like BS but it's actually true (No, really it is)

BUT, my celly will be back fully functioning and operational on Friday, yes that's this Friday. LOL, I'm glad because being without communication is hard.

So what have I been up to:

School is hard. Enuff said. I've been trying to catch up my Statistics class because um yeah, I'm not doing good at this point and I HAVE to pass this class. SMH, it's not looking good at this point.

I really need some hair products but I think I need money to buy them first, HA! My hair is literally NATURAL VS. PERMED right now and neither side is winning so yeah, my head looks a mess.

Lastly, I want to change the blog-a-sphere around a little bit. I don't want to focus on soley hair anymore and I'm to strapped for time to create yet another blog. I love this one too much and I just don't want to see it wither out.

Officially 1 Year

I am officialy 1 year post relaxer! I'm waiting on my Blackberry and I'll be updating the site with new pics.

I've been MIA due to loads and loads of homework :O(

It's rough trying to do school and blog everyday. However, I am going to go back to doing my regular posting but it's not always going to be hair related. I'm looking forward to doing my BC so when I set a concrete date I'll definitely take pics and maybe tape it!

3 Tips & Myths Part II

Tip # 4

Join a hairboard.

Now I know that this has nothing to do with actually doing your hair but there is a wealth of information and support on hairboards. I find that the biggest fear that people have when transitioning is the lack of support. :O( I know a few people wondered => WHY I would want to go from a relaxer to kinky hair but I made the decision based upon what I felt was the best way to go.

There is also a heap of information on the boards plus a good bit of them are absolutely free! Take your time and research which board is best for you and sign up today. I'm an active member of several boards so if anyone needs any suggestions feel free to ask.

Tip #5

Stay away from high heat.

Being that you are attempting to go natural, don't fight the kinks! The purpose of going natural is to, well, wear your natural hair. Trying to match your natural hair to your relaxed hair is a battle that you'll seldom win and if you do happen to win....you don't know if you've caused any permanent damage to your coil pattern.

I straightened my hair a lot at first but once I realized that my hair was sooooo much thicker without a relaxer, I opted to go on a no heat regimen for a few months. I'll take a picture later today so that you can see a better pic of where my NG ends. My permed ends look a H.A.M. LOL

Always try to do styles that match your natural hair. Here's a link for some ideas:

Tip # 6

Find products that work for your hair.

This will definitely be a time of trial and error but don't overdo it. It's so easy to go out and buy every product that someone else is using only to find that your hair doesn't love it at all! Find out what your hair loves and stick with it. Don't use a bunch of new products at the same time either. You won't be able to tell what's working and what's not.

Don't become a product junkie as it will only lead you to a cabinet full of products that you don't like, can't use, or just don't want. You'll waste more money & time than you will anything. If you see a product you like....ask someone if they could send you a sample or they may even have a sample for sale. This is why joining hair boards are great too! I have gotten so many products for cheap that I would normally pay a grip for so that's a benefit for me.

Myth # 2

You can revert relaxed hair back to its natural state.

This is false. Once you've permed/relaxed your hair with a chemical treatment, you CAN NEVER revert that hair back to its natural state. Take a look at this page I found with some information on hair relaxers and what they do exactly.

Transitioning Tips & Myths

Especially for you LaQT! I see ya in the comments :O) Enjoy Ladies, I added a couple of pictures of my hair showing what my texture kind of looks like. It was hard to get the pic really clear due to the web cam on hubby's computer :O/

I will be adding more tips as I go along the way along with any that you all think should be on the list! Here are the first 3 Tips & a Myth

Tip # 1

Determine why you are transitioning.

This is the most important tip that I can give. Transitioning is such a drastic change in your life. You may get negative reactions from friends & family, rude comments from people you know or even complete strangers...all of them wondering why you decided to drop your straight hair for what God gave you naturally. Be prepared to defend your decision should this day ever come and know that this journey to natural hair can be a beautiful one if you let it.

Tip # 2

Detangle your hair before washing.

Some may disagree with detangling your transitioning hair before washing versus detangling while in the shower or wet. I beg to differ. I lose more hair detangling my hair wet than I do before I wash. I part my hair in sections and gently comb from the bottom to the roots and plait each section after I'm done. This also saves me a big headache and mess afterwards. Make sure you do the method that works best on YOUR hair.

Tip # 3

Wash your hair in sections.

This goes along with Tip # 2! After detangling your hair, wash it in the same sections you braided and make sure to keep them separate by re-braiding it as you wash, rinse, and condition. This will definitely cut down on your "detangling" time once you are completely done. I can run the comb straight through my hair after I wash just because I take the time to detangle before washing.

Myth # 1

You can't comb transitioning hair everyday.

I think this is totally untrue. Everyone's hair texture is different and it takes a lot of trial and error before finding methods that work in your favor. I found that waiting a week to comb my hair led me to a lot more hair loss than when I gently combed and braided sections each night. This works for me and a couple of others that I know so it does work for someone other than me! If this is not for you...find what works! That's the exciting part of DIY (do it yourself) haircare.

Singer, actress. Born Aaliyah Dana Haughton, on January 16, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, the young singer competed unsuccessfully on the television program Star Search at age 11. Later that same year, she performed with R&B legend Gladys Knight, the former wife of her uncle and manager, Barry Hankerson, at a five-night stand in Las Vegas.

In 1994, at the age of 15, Aaliyah catapulted onto the R&B charts herself with her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing But a Number. Produced by the successful singer R. Dominican Salons...Ye or Nay?

So, while I was over on LHCF I ran up on a thread with a video showing a Dominican blowout. Now, there were lots of mixed feelings about the actual process b/c of the high heat that is used to straigten the hair.

I loved the results though! I can't really say I saw any damage caused just by watching the video....there is a lot of smoke but I believe it was the products combined with the heat. Let me know your thoughts!

What's the word & Product Review

Hey guys! This is a quick update and an unexpected product review since I happened to pick up the wrong conditioner, SMH.

My internet connection is not working at home and we're gonna try to switch to cable internet (???) and see if the connection is faster. My computer is slow as bricks and I got classes coming up next week for Fall and I need my speed.

Now, on to the product review....

Now, to your left you will see my beloved Mane & Tale Condish that I've sooooo grown to love, however, I was totally oblivious to the fact that that is the DEEP Moisturizing Condish that I've never used!! When I started pouring it out the bottle and it was BLUE....yes, I was pretty much like "What in the world did I buy?????"

So, I added it to my Shikakai Co-Wash (which I'll never do again) and let's just say my hair still has grit and grain all throughout. I DC'ed with this condish as well and I just really liked the Regular Moisturizing better. *sigh* Oh well, I guess I'll be re-cowashing this weekend. Sorry about the pics but I'll have plenty Saturday of my results. I've really had some major growth over the last few months!!

Short Cuts.....Is Rhianna the icon for short hair now?

Ever since the chart-topping single "Umbrella" dropped in 2007, Rhianna's ever changing short crop styles have been setting the bar for these new short hair cuts that have got celebrities donning shaved heads, shorter locks, and precision cuts.

Even recently, Ciara is now rocking a new cut that everyone is now saying is mocking Rhianna's style. Now, I stans for Rhianna's style b/c I really feel like she really brought a difference back into music by losing the ever-so-popular lace front wigs that everyone and their mama is wearing. Hell, even your local beauty supply is stocking $57.99 lace fronts for the budgeting divas out here.

However, I don't like the fact that people are acting as if sutting your hair means you are "following" someone's style. What's wrong with putting up the weave & glue for a while? I think that Ciara's hair(wig/cut?) is growing on me and she looks pretty nice in some shots. Now, I'm going to need for her former hair stylist to stop with the salt throwing but there's nothing wrong with changing up your look and style every now and then.

Truth is, Halle Berry, Monica, Nia Long, and countless others have fiercely sported short & sharp cuts lonnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggg before it became a fading trend. So, before folks start crediting an entire style to one individual....they need to do their research. This style was, has been, and will always be popular without celebrity support. Any thoughts?

Mane & Tale Conditioner

I've heard soooooo many stories about Mane & Tale Conditioner to the point that I was sick of hearing about it, LOL. However, while I was contemplating on the egg treatment a couple of weeks ago this conditioner popped in my head after reading one of my favorite blogs. I decided to go ahead and try some along with my Shikakai Powder wash (see previous posts!) as my DC.

It was great! I love the slip that it gave and powered with the results from the shikakai my hair was soft, strong, and full! I will be doing another results post this weekend and show more of my texture of my new growth. I'll be using the remaining Mane & Tale for a DC after I co-wash this weekend. As you all know, transitioning can become a chore with all the detangling, co-washing, bunning, etc. Well, I've basically changed my regimen every week to figure out what my hair likes best during this stage. I'm am now 39 weeks post relaxer and I'm turning to ayurvedic hair care. I listed some information below on the Shikakai Powder that I now use intead of shampoo!

Transitioning Emotions

Transitioning is the process of growing out chemical processes in your hair, for example chemical relaxers. This can be a long and tedious process if you decide that you don't want to do a BC or Big Chop. A BC is basically a way to say your cutting off the chemically treated part of your hair leaving the natural new growth behind.

Many people plunge into transitioning after years of being frustrated with perms, breakage, and scalp issues and aren't really aware of the major change that transitioning will bring into your life. Your hair will be going from it's straight state to the kinky-curly pattern you were born with. This seems easy enough but you are also transitioning your mind along with your hair. For me, transitioning is also about preparing my mind to accept my hair in it's natural state. That may seem irrational to say but I've been getting perms for as long as I remember so wearing my hair silky straight is the only way I know.

I've heard so many stories from other women that have went natural about the stares and comments they have encountered about their natural hair. That's not going to stop me because I don't care what people think about my hair, as long as I love it-- that's all that should matter. However, we don't live in a society where "different" is accepted openly without judgment.

So, please note that transitioning is not only changing your hair but changing your state of mind. When you cut your hair you will undoubtedly experience a wave of emotions ranging from excitement, liberation, freedom, disappointment, shame, regret...anything can happen. I'm not saying it will but you will experience something you've never felt before so enjoy your journey to natural hair. B&L is here if you want to share your experience!

BTW: The picture is my hair in October 2008 right after my relaxer. I can't wait to post my results of my transition. I'm now at 33 weeks post and I have tons of new growth!!

Hey Lovelies! I thought long and hard this weekend and I've decided to start another blog! I will out of school until August and wanted to focus on blogging and make it into a source of income also.

What does that mean for Browne & Lovely??? It will be going back to what it was when I started it!! I will feature hair tips, product reviews, skin care, etc.... The fashion section will be an additional post on every Friday just for anyone who likes to see that section.

However, my new blog will be completely different. I will be more focused on music and entertainment. No, this will not be a gossip blog!!! I'm not completely sure on what is going to be on there exactly but it will be the one with the "other" topics.

I wanted to change the atmosphere here a B&L to where everyone who visits is feeling the material. I've fallen off some with my camera tearing up and random posts but now that I have the time....I'm focusing solely on making sure my readers get the best of my work!

Are you afraid to get your hair done?

This is becoming a heated debate on hair boards across the net! The truth is, why are women becoming afraid of getting their hair done by a stylist?

Well, to be honest, about 90% of us have had at least ONE bad experience with a stylist in our life so far. However, does this mean we ban getting our hair done professionally FOR LIFE??? I think not....I mean, they are human and can make honest mistakes. The bulk of this STYLIST vs. CLIENT drama is due to half facts and half stepping clients that aren't taking responsibility for their hair when they sit in the seat.

Yes, I know I can surely be debated on that and truth is although cosmetologists are the professionals, each person interprets what they have learned differently thus producing different results. It is up to us, the consumers, to make sure we are thoroughly satisfied with the services we are receiving. Sitting like a mad duck will not help you in the long run.

I am currently putting together a detailed list on some tips to find and keep a great stylist along with how to be less passive-aggressive while in a salon. I've been working feverishly on this so I hope I get a great response! Thanks to all those that comment and to the new followers!

I've started thinking about why I follow so many blogs or subscribe to youtuber's since I've accumulated wayyyyyy too many subscriptions, some of them outdated since the original posters don't bother to inform you that they are taking a break!!! (Shamefully, I'm guilty of delayed breaks also, SMH)

Point of this post is, does a person's looks make you subscribe or follow their journey?

I've noticed a lot of threads on different boards about people to follow/subscribe to, however, one of the most noticeable compliments to the person is that they are either (1) pretty, gorgeous, cute (2)hair is beautiful, long, natural, etc...(3) etc.....

I'm just interested to see what people have to say. I know some blogs that offer valuable information but then there are some that have me ?????

My Review:

I love this stuff!!! I have used "black soap" in the past and hated it. I figured out that this is probably because it was not the real black soap. It was definitely black (had my whole sink looking a mess, LOL) and highly fragranced. It couldn't have been real. Only thing was, at the time I didn't know how to determine what was real and it's been about 3 years when I brought it. I've learned to research!!!

Now, Nasabb's Black Soap is so moisturizing. I have incorporated it into my facial care regimen and replaced my Queen Helene Oatmeal Honey Scrub. I'm having some skin problems so I've started using Tretinoin Cream to help clear up some blemishes. It's been drying my skin out terribly and causing a lot of peeling. However, I must say...since using this black soap, my peeling has disappeared! I couldn't believe it! I'll list my facial regimen below and if anyone out there is suffering from acne/blemishes or hyperpigmentation...let me know and I've got some great tips out there!

Pole Dancing...A New Fitness Wave??

I think so...I spotted this video over on one of my favorite blogs, Sandra Rose, and was amazed at the strength it takes for some of the moves these ladies perform.

There used to be the old stereotype that only strippers and exotic dancers (same thing I know!!) would use poles and etc....Now it's becoming not only a sport but a way to keep fit and entertain your man at home! There are many poles out there for the low that are worth getting too!

Go ahead ladies, buy that pole and put that work in to learn some of these moves! Just kidding...take a few classes first. They are being offered everywhere these days. If you don't feel comfortable without clothing, I'm sure wearing the minimum will be sufficient. I'll be researching some places in the ATL to go and train a little later along with some pole info in case any of you want it!

Hair Update!

Well, I finally took out my sew-in a week earlier than I expected. I would have had it in a total of 2 months next weekend so I decided to get it over with this weekend since I start another quarter in school on Wednesday!

I'll start by saying that my sew-in was a wonderful experience! I was really nervous about losing a lot of hair and the damage that others have said this style causes. I'm glad to say that I suffered minimal hair loss, which was the hair I would have shed anyway, so I'm happy to say that.

I'll definitely be getting another sew-in in the future. I'll be listing some tips later tomorrow about how to prepare for a sew-in.

BTW, I did a job on my hair today and I'll be posting the pics tomorrow as well. I already have my hair wrapped and you know how that is!

You know the ones we can still play today and laugh like we've never seen it before or just ones we thought was the ish back in the day. My favs range from Juice, Friday, House Party and my all time favorite.....Breakin II.

I have every one of those and still watch today! My problem with movies these days is lack of classic material. Remember Boomerang???? I mean, whoooooo, that movie was the stuff when it came out. All star cast, funny, just all round great setting with a banging soundtrack.

She is a certified crook...yes I said crook. She has to be the most unprofessional online vendors I've encountered in the YEARS that I've been shopping online. I ordered products on February 10th and have yet to get them. Nor does she even know the tracking number to the package that she "so-called" mailed. Sounds fishy to me guys especially when she didn't bother to tell me she didn't mail until the the 16th of February...yet the info from PayPal listed the 11th??? That just goes to show that she didn't mail it on the 11th like she posted to my account.

I've even won the PayPal claim but seems like she has no funds available for my refund. Sad part is, I've emailed her telling her that I needed my money back b/c I had to come out of pocket for the products I needed. She tells me she understands and will even offer me a full refund....uuuummm where is it??

She has banned me from her site...wonder why?? LOL, I guess she doesn't want this little mishap to ruin things over there for her due to her crappy customer service and lies. I've handled things nicely but I see that she doesn't want to go that route. It's been well over a month and I'm still without my money, my products, or a resolution. I've got emails to prove what I'm claiming and should anyone need any further proof, holla.

But beware of her sites and make sure to do some thorough research before joining any boo-boo hair boards listing their businesses as their side hustle.

Breaking the Spending Cycle

This is a tough thing to do and this really takes strong will and a lot of determination to get through it. I, for one, am lacking on those things and trying considerably hard to back to saving money. During these times it's important to have some $$$ in the bank in case of layoff, unexpected expenses, and ????

I saved myself at least $6 by not eating out lunch today. Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!! Uuuhhh, hold up...that's only a good thing if I don't spend it later today.... so, um yeah breaking the cycle of spending is a hard thing. *sigh*

Domestic abuse just became important

well, at least that is what it seems like. Ever since the "Chrianna" debacle, every celebrity, media outlet, blogs, etc... known has been coming out with something about domestic abuse. Before anyone jumps on me, that's a great thing but domestic abuse has been going on long before this incident. I've seen worse cases than "Chrianna" and majority of the time we never here anything about domestic abuse other than little segments here and there.

My problem with the media right now is, why all the exploitation??? I know, I know...it's news but my point is why does every celebrity feel the need to make shows/statements NOW about DA when it's been happening everyday for as long as I can remember? *sigh* Joe Torry and a comedian by the name of Vanessa (?) just had a domestic altercation while on tour.....I've heard little about this case on the mainstream news. Sad, but yet there's a Chrianna update every freaking day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I wish celebrities would stop hopping on bandwagons to promote whatever's making the news. I'm glad that everyone's speaking out about domestic abuse but the only two people that seem to be getting the backlash. Stand up for a cause because you believe in fighting for it, not to gain some publicity because it the hot topic of the moment.

Today has been a good day for me. Besides the fact that we were running late this morning, left half my lunch at home, and I'm still broke....I'll still say I broke even today. I'm officially in my classes today and that's a great feeling. I love when school starts because it means I'm one semester closer to finishing. I wished I would have finished when I was younger but...what can I say?

I don't think I was ready for college when I graduated from high school. Right now is my time to be in...I mean, I'm struggling to make it everyday so what better time? It's so much easier for me to focus and do great things when I have a challenge or something going against me. It makes me work harder to get it. I hate when people just hand you something that's finished and then tells you to take credit for it...huh?

I can't do things like that...I take pride in everything I do, including my blog. I'm learning and will be changing a few things as the weeks go by. I do have a contest in mind, due to some unforeseen circumstances the one I planned on having recently has been pushed back.

I just wanted to let everyone know to be really careful about some of the gossip blogs you visit. I'm not sure if I can legally post the name of the one that I went to but I ended up with a Wormblaster (those of you in the IT world know that's not a good thing to say the least) and it completely ffffff'd up my computer. I had to get my computer imaged and start from scratch. That's a man down, code 10 moment...in Frankies world...LOL

*sigh*This is a result of someone allow cheap ass ad companies to display anything on their site. I didn't accept anything but it popped up as I was clicking on the site and took it from there and ran. *sigh* Point is, I have the cream of the crop protection on my computer so......

I will not be visiting that blog again and furthermore I will definitely be more cautious of what sites I frequent. People, please use reputable ad companies and not just some random place online that's not interested in being legit with who their advertising.

Getting ready for the new year!

Part of my plans for the new year include getting a sew-in weave to help me during my transition. Since I know there may be other ladies out there wanting to do the same, I'll be including my experiences with that on here as well.

The main reason for this post is to get ready for the new year! I have a lot of goals that I want to accomplish and things I want to improve about my blog. I'll be comprising my list of things for the new year and posting some time tomorrow.

Wash Day

Yes, I finally washed my hair after two weeks :O( I've got to get better with this. I detangled on Christmas day, on dry hair, and didn't suffer much hair breakage/loss. I've decided that I will start detangling my hair in smaller sections while dry before I detangle again in the shower. My hair did sooooo good today with that method. The amount of hair in my comb was a few strands here and there....which I expect when I don't wash and detangle regularly.

I was told by a few to never detangle on dry hair...but I must say it works for me so this is what I'm going to do from now on. My hair is air drying as I type and so soft to the touch. I'm still going strong on my challenge and I'm totally loving being heat-free! The key was finding the right way to air dry without ending up with a frizzy head of hair. Now that I have that down...I'm home free.

I haven't tested out too many transitioning styles right now...too lazy I suppose. Bunning is working for me right now and it's simple and easy. I find that bantu knots and braidouts lead my hair into a tangled web of mess and I just don't like the knots that I incur. So, I'll be trying to find some easier ways of doing these styles without tearing out all my hair.

So I've been told at least. I'm ranging about 5'9" and I've always been taller than other females. I'm cool with it actually. I've never played basketball, lawd knows I got sick to death about that question. I guess folks figure you can play just because you got a few inches on ya.... not true. I play pretty well but let's just say I would have made the team if I would have followed through with practice. The fact was, I gave it my all but I would get maybe a minute tops in the game and damn near at the end??? What can I do if we're already winning at the end while folks are going to the snack stands preparing to watch the guys play next???

Anyways, wow- I've totally gone off topic. Today I wanted to add a little fashion discussion to the blog and the main thing I have trouble finding is JEANS THAT FIT. I mean really fit without that bulge in the back and look like high waters when your trying to be cute in heels. When your tall, it's almost impossible to find stuff that fits and is affordable.

The line I'm now interested in trying is PZI. They have had some pretty rave reviews and a lot of women with curves love them. They also have a selection where you can buy by the inseam!! I love it.

So if your a curvy diva, this might be a good line for you to check out if you haven't. For those of you that have, get on over there because they have a wonderful selection of jeans that are on sale. You can't beat that!

Regimen For Sunday!!

Quick Update For My Sunday Process 12/7/2008

1. Parted hair into 4 sections, clipping off each section.

2. Wet hair and shampooed with Nexxus Aloe Rid, then CON, then DC'ed with V05.

*Although it's not the best conditioner for me to DC with--I also had to detangle and this is one of the best for me to detangle with.

3. Detangled each section (horrible for me) and proceeded to rinse out conditioner afterwards.

4. Applied Aphogee Pro-Vitamin Leave-In on each section.

5. Applied Fantasia Polisher Gel to front of hair, pulled it back and place into a clip.

6. Tied my hair down with a silk scarf and removed the clip about 2 hours after my front had dried some.

7. Moisturized and sealed, before I went to bed, with Wave Noveau+Coconut Oil.

Transitioning Update!

Hello all! I just wanted to give a quick update about my transitioning status and give a tip or two to those who may be experiencing the same trials as me. First off, I brought some Fantasia Polishing Hair Gel to help me with the frizzies I have after I air dry. Surprisingly it worked!! This will definitely be one of my staples.

Yesterday was wash day and believe me I was past due...way past due. I did a clarifying wash to get the buildup out of my hair and detangled with conditioner and I lost wayyyyyy too much hair. I'm not for sure if it was because I hadn't combed my hair in days or if I'm still having a problem with my hair coming out. I started a BC around May and I'm thinking that it may be the culprit. I'm not totally sure so I will be scheduling some appointments today to see what's going on with that.

Good news is that my hair is totally detangled and I've decided to use low manipulation for the remainder of my transition. I'm bunning to reduce tangles and wearing a hair clip so that I don't constantly have to wear a ponytail. I'm not using anymore heat because I don't want to take any chances with messing up my natural curl pattern. Seriously, why go through all of this if I'm just gonna flat iron my kinks away only to find out I've damaged them too much???

Yesterday's process was very simple. I washed and detangled first. I've started to incorporate Aphogee products back into my regimen as it seems my hair is craving protein. I used Aphogee Pro-Vitamin Leave-In and pulled my hair back into a ponytail. I applied a small amount of the Fantasia Polisher Gel lightly dabbed on the front section and tied a scarf around my head. Once the front was pretty dry, I removed the scarf and let my hair hang but used my hair clip to keep it together vs. using a ponytail holder. This worked much better for me. My hair dried flat and I minimized a lot of the poofiness that I usually have. I will definitely be doing this for the rest of my transition.
